LFW - Holly Fulton

Holly Fulton

Origin: Edinburgh 

Design background: Holly studied at Edinburgh College of Art and The Royal College of Art .

Career highlight: “Alber Elbaz telling me I was wearing the biggest necklace he'd ever seen.” 

Design signatures: “Graphic print, luxurious materials and hot accessories.”

How would you describe the Holly Fulton woman? “Anyone who knows what they like and likes what I do.”

What is your trademark piece? “A digitally printed, full-length monochrome dress in silk jersey. It sums up my ethos of things that are easy to wear yet luxurious, incorporating my favourite colour combination of black and white, with a feel of contemporary elegance which you can take anywhere.”

Name three things that are inspiring you for autumn/winter 2011:“Heinz Edelmann, lips and devore.”

What’s next for your brand? “We will be focusing on expanding the breadth of techniques within our range of fabrics and the evolution of the surface within these; widening our range of products and concentrating on the appropriate collaborations to enhance our brand identity.”

 

What music is playing in your studio this season? “A hedonistic mix of Usher, Devo, and M.I.A, with a dash of Nico for good measure.”

David Koma

Origin: Georgia. David then grew up in Saint-Petersburg.

Design background: David studied both his BA and MA at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

Career highlight: “I’m looking forward to it!”

Design signatures:“Sculptural shapes, heavy embellishment and a perfect fit.”

How would you describe the David Koma woman? “Powerful and confident.”

What is your trademark piece? “The sculptural dress with metal embellishment.”

Name three things that are inspiring you for autumn/winter 2011:“Dark forests, Tim Burton and hallucinations.”

What’s next for your brand? “The autumn/winter 2011 show.”

What music is playing in your studio this season? “It’s a complete mix of styles, dependent on the day.”

What encapsulates London fashion for you? “Charing Cross Road.”

David Koma‘s Spring/Summer 2011 show at London Fashion Week opened with a change of scene as feminine ‘ballerina inspired’ sugary pink dresses glided down the runway. David Koma's past collections have been filled with heavy embellishment, sculptural designs and structure a powerful, confident women.

Pretty pleated peplums and fitted bodices completed a beautiful symmetrical look in sheer fabrics and wool. The BA and MA Central Saint Martins graduate claimed his inspiration for spring/summer was “Fernand Léger, spiral staircases and chiaroscuro.” which is seen in Art Deco cut-out shapes and silhouettes.

The tutu-esque designs quickly moved into more of a Koma's signature statement pieces; bold graphic prints and geometric shapes. Flashes of yellow to add a summery palette for the Spring/Summer collection. Revealing linear neck lines revealed fresh pale skin, which only complemented the collection. 

The fresh yellow turned to gold lamé python print for a heavily adorned comeback of David’s embellishments. "A contrast between organza and leather and pink and black, which shows the exploration in new designer Koma’s work with him pushing boundaries and “challenging” himself  “in every aspect of the design process.”

London Fashion Week Sept 17-22

I was lucky enough to attend LFW this september 2010. Before this is was a FW virgin! And yes it was as amazingly vibrant, exciting and fascinating as what i had dreamed it to be -- except better. It was full of fashionistas, models, PRs, press, photographers, celebs, wannabes, overly done-up barbies, students, futuristic Lady Gaga wannabes and more. Tbh it was spectacular.
